Blue from West Oz - On Liberty in the US

Part 9 of Paul "Blue" Hartridge's travels throughout the US visiting boatsailors and other folks of equally questionable character.

Leg 18 - Pittsburg, Pennsylvania - 3/27/2004 - Host: Glenn Keiffer

Glenn (Erik Von Zipper):  Blue arrived just fine in Pittsburgh at about 1730. We stopped at my place for a shower and then we were off to dinner - but that never happened. We hit a few bars first and then all the eatries were closed. So Blue and I went bar hopping.

I would like to blame him for our strange behavior, but that would be a lie. We had a great time and were thrown out of the bar right near my place. No, no, it was closing time.

We are trying to get ourselves together to meet John Paterson down at the Requin. We have to have breakfast or some type of food. So off we go. Paul is just one great guy. More later, when I can see straight.

Blue, Glenn's favorite barmaid Paula, and Von Zipper himself.  Next, Blue John Paterson and Glenn with the Requin behind.

Blue's Version of Night One: It was him not me that dragged the two of us into some bars last night. As those that have met me already, I am not a drinker...ok, maybe just a dozen. lol Gee, two nights of drinking is killing me. *_*

Had a great night at the Legion with Bill - Olgoat 'n Toots - Art - Dex 'n Solveig, lots of stories were told by none other than Dex and for those that have asked me if he talks like he writes, the answer is 'yes'.... it was wonderful to meet him and listen to his stories..... and Olgoat with his jokes, well, some of them were funny! lol Caught the 'dog' to Pittsburgh, met a real nice lady and if Rene (hope I got the name right) is actually reading this, please drop me a line (paulh1962@yahoo.com.au)

Through blurry eyes and a muddled brain (more muddled than normal at least) we caught up with John Patterson and his family for a tour of the Requin. Nice to meet them all.

Ok, a bit of truth now... it was me that dragged Glenn out and corrupted him, Glenn being a former USN Submariner and a Fireman would never drink a drop of alcohol! *_*

Glenn on Blue's Departure of 3/29/2004: After our adventure Saturday Night, which both of us have different versions of, we had breakfast Sunday morning at Eat'N'Park, which was on the way to town. There we met John Paterson and his family at 1030, which meant that Blue and I had about enough sleep to sorta sober up. John met us at the science center, where the Requin is tied up. He had a pass, that got us in for free.

John has a beautiful family. We saw some other exhibits and then went on the 481. A sub sailor named Greg gave us a real nice tour. It was a fun visit. Sunday night we went to dinner for Italian. Then it was home to my place.

I was beat, but atyed up until 0100 hours. Blue lasted alittle longer, but I was the last one to bed Saturday Night. We just had time for breakfast Monday and then he caught the "Dog" to Detroit.

He should be there about 2200 hrs. All I can say is Blue is a special person. I admire is commitment to this journey. - Glenn

Leg 19 - Detroit, Michigan - 3/29/2004 - Host: Fred "Doc" Gardner

Blue 3/30: Doc Gardner, took me for a tour of downtown Detroit and then met up with a Marine buddy of his from Vietnam days, had a nice time and doing it all again tomorrow before we head for a meal in Canada. Going by the pics (below) you can see why I am going there again! *_*

There is another photo but unsure at to whether or not to post it as too many of the guys will have a heart attack! Blue *_*

Fred "Doc" Gardner on April Fool's Day: Here are photos taken during Blue's visit. We had a good time and the beer supply in Detroit has been severly dented. We were forced to go to Canada to re-supply.

I picked Blue up at the Greyhound Bus Station in downtown Detroit on Monday evening (3/29/04) at 2200. He was immediately treated to two of Detroit's finest panhandlers. When we got to our house we talked into the wee hours but since I had to work the next day we didn't do anything special. However, on Tuesday, I was able to take a half day off and we commenced "early liberty" The festivities began at the Wintergarden Bar where I introduced Blue to a good friend of mine and former Marine, Tim Thornton.

Tim is the guy with the full beard. We were both in Chu Lai Vietnam but didn't know each other then. After one or 100 beers Blue finally relaxed and then started applying that Australian charm to the charming young ladies in the photos. They are sisters and think Blue is just wonderful. Heather is still waiting for Blue to return but I told her he turned into a Wallaby at midnight and we have to put him in his cage.

After our time at the "pub" we returned to my house where my wife, Pat, served us a fine Yupper dinner of pasties and Guinness. Just what we needed, more beer. I think we both got overserved that night.

On Wednesday we went to Canada for a little more "sedate" evening of dinner in an Irish Pub with some Canadian friends of ours. Canada let out a big sigh of relief when we crossed back into the U.S. They knew they had successfully avoided an international incident.

On the way home Blue's reputation showed itself and it started to snow. He got all excited hoping for a late March blizzard. Fortunately we had to disappoint him and it didn't snow for long. After five months of the stuff even us natives are getting tired of it.

This morning at 0600 he got on the train in Windsor, Ontario and headed east for Niagara Falls and Rochester New York. It was announced on the radio this morning that "Blue has left the building" I hope he enjoyed himself as much as we enjoyed having him. He is a good house guest and a delight to be around. I hope all the photos make it through. - Doc Gardner

The first photo (above) is Blue sitting at my computer. I turned my back and he moved right in and started telling everyone his side of the story before I could reveal the truth. The second photo is at the pub with Amy, then with her sister, Heather.

Second row, 4th photo (above) is Blue, Doc Gardner, Tim Thornton (USMC). 5th photo is Doc Gardner signing the Official Blue World Tour T-shirt. 6th photo is Pat Gardner adding some illustrations commemorating Detroit on the T-shirt.

7th photo (above) is what happens when you turn your back on a boat sailor; he makes a run on your wife. LOL The 9th photo is our dinner in Windsor at Patrick O'Ryans Pub. L to R is Blue, Doc, Irene and Pat. Photo taken by Irene's husband Nes. They are good friends of ours and give us a reason to go over to Canada regularly. -- Doc Gardner
