David L. Mortrud

David L. Mortrud, 63, of Park Rapids died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at his home on Shipman Lake.
He was born Oct. 2, 1940 to Clarence and Helen (Chase) Mortrud in Minneapolis. He graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis in 1958. He graduated from Augsburg College in 1963. He also attended University of Connecticut Law School graduating in 1974 with a J.D. law degree. He served in the US Navy as a submarine officer from 1963 to 1974. He was the first supply Corp Officer on a nuclear fast attack submarine and rode the USS Sturgeon, SSN 637 and the USS George Bancroft SSBN 643. He was a staff officer to Vice Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. After leaving active duty he served in the US Naval Reserve as an officer from 1974 to 1989. He was the first supply corp reserve officer to attend the US Navy War College graduating in 1983 and retiring with a rank of captain.
