At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

I am saddened by this news. Joop and I emailed on and off for the whole time he was on this board.

Attention!!!
Hand Salute!!!

Farewell shipmate. I will miss you.

There is a port of no return, where ships
May ride at anchor for a little space
And then, some starless night the cable slips,
Leaving an eddy at the mooring place...
Gulls, veer no longer. Sailor, rest your oar.
No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.

How sad to learn this.

I felt I knew Joop, just a little bit, from his posts.

Another shipmate gone.

Fair winds and following seas, Joop.

I am so sorry to hear of Joops passing. I have just been trying to get a snail mail address to send him something and was not successful. Hand Salute Shipmate.

Joop was a great cyber-shipmate. We "spoke" often since he arrived on the bbs way back when. I hadn't heard from him since late August as we were working to add Dutch and British boats to SubmarineSailor.Com to join the US and Australian boats. I knew he had gone thru a tough medical time but I had the impression that it was behind him. Not surprising that Joop chose to keep his troubles to himself.

Dammit!

So long my friend... you're free to sail in any direction you choose.... Godspeed.

Total shock doesn't begin to express my feelings. I had just emailed him last night. Now I know why he didn't jump right back with a reply.

Joop has been a friend of many years. We had often exchanged website ideas as the Internet developed, and he wasn't hesitant to step up and try anything new whatsoever. I am greatly saddened by his passing, and he will be sorely missed.
