Subject: I walk

I walk 3 1/2 miles every morning. I Didn’t use to walk. The doc convinced me walking is the best preventative medicine there is, and it's free. It's insultingly simple. I'm retired, I have the time. 50 minute walks, every day, no ear buds, no music, no phone, no distractions, just walking. Walking is simple, but not easy. The discipline of making yourself go every single day, regardless of weather, mood, or inclination, is harder than it sounds, until it becomes a habit. Then it becomes something you protect.  I started those walks because I was told to. I kept doing it because something happened out there I hadn't expected.I started noticing things. The flowers. The way the light falls through trees at a certain time in the morning. The clouds. A croaking frog. The neighbor's  garden I must have passed a hundred times without seeing. I started saying hello to people. Started feeling the air on my face as a thing worth feeling. The world had been turned down to a low hum for years - everything filtered through substances, everything slightly muffled and artificial - and now it has come back up to full volume. Slowly, not all at once. It takes longer than anyone tells you. It's not a grand awakening on day three, or day ten, or even day thirty. It's a gradual returning, like circulation coming back to a limb that has been asleep. First the faintest tingling, then more, then one day you realize you can feel everything again, and you don't remember exactly when that happened. You're alive again, resurrected.
If you don't walk, try it. The rewards are tremendous.

I was doing fifty minutes, but sadly its down to 35 minutes lately.  It seems like it tunes up the body for the rest of the day.  Being Type II diabetic it lowers the blood sugar immensely, and aids circulation also.

My thanks to you Ian. You wrote a dang love story, everybody enjoys a good love story. Gotta ask, how did the things you loved prior like sour cream and bacon react to this new "friend"
Seriously, well written.

Beautifully written Ian, reads like fine poetry!  Since I retired, I RARELY miss a day at the gym.  Once home from there, I walk the dog thru a rustic natural 1 mile loop - very peaceful, often spotting deer and rabbit.  Rain or shine... notice new things all the time.

Post retirement, it took me some time to "learn how to do nothing" as it is nothing but subtleties!

Your words are spot on - cheers!
