At random: In World War II the Germans lost 782 submarines, the Japanese lost 130, Great Britan and Commonwealth countries lost 88 subs, Russia lost 110 submarines and the United States lost only 52 submarines. Twenty-three of the Japanese subs lost were victims of the American Submarine Service. |

Mess cooking Posts: 28 Location: Milwaukee, WI | Subject: Looking for Soviet Submarine Experts My latest project involves US and Soviet submarines from the Cold War era and while i have information at hand for the Soviet boats, i'm afraid that it's rather limited. So i was hoping that there were some experts on the Soviet/Russian submarine service that might be willing to lend a hand with the project. If so, please let me know here in this thread or send me an email. Thanks!

Old Salt Posts: 256 | Subject: RE: Looking for Soviet Submarine Experts Rainman: Found the books I mentioned above......Best for tactics is Soviet Naval Tactics by Milan Vego, US Naval Institute Press 1992....This book gets into overall warfighting assumptions, and breaks down each type of tactics used by Russian fleet commanders and individual tactics used by subs to combat various US naval vessels from CSGs to sub on sub.....You'll note the book is dated but it does cover the Cold War, I assume that the info you're looking for.... The other book is not really going to help but it is an excellent photo summary of all Soviet warships, good section on subs....Norman Palomar's The Naval Institute Guide to the Soviet Navy 1991. Pictures and descriptions of most Russkie boats....lean on naval tactics...you may be able to assume strategy when you see pics.....best.....bob melley

Old Salt Posts: 256 | Subject: RE: Looking for Soviet Submarine Experts Rainman: hope info helps.....the first book helped me a lot......Norm P's book has lots of pics & diagrams... I believe since Russia sold her Project 877E Kilos to lots of folks, there are a bunch of countries using her sub tactics...the 877 Export Kilos have six blade prop and aren't as good as the Project 636(?) boats built for actual Russian navy use. Iran, Egypt, India, China and a number of other countries have the Export models. China (PLAN) just bot eight more of the better 636 boats.....I'm sure the newest Russian Amur subs will also be on sale. bob
