Subject: Where were you November 22, 1963?

Thanks Sid for reminding me.

On November 22, 1963 I was still in high school, My senior year. My loudmouth locker partner came up to me while I was standing at our locker between 3 & 4th  period classes and told me Kennedy had been shot in the head. I didn't believe him and told him to shut up.  A few minutes later as soon as class started a teacher came into the room and asked for silence, the President of the United States was dead. I still get goosebumps relating the story.

I was about to graduate from bootcamp at Great Lakes.
That turned into a solemn ceramony.

Got to remembering this today and mentioned to my wife that I was at Anacostia Naval Station transient barracks awaiting Skipjack's return from the Med when we got the news. I ended up in the Honor Guard for the funeral.

We were returning to Pier 22 D/S piers Norva on the Argonaut (SS-475) from a Med run, running on the surface, not much to do, so I had our Ham Radio Station up, talking to folks back in the U.S. on SSB (Single Side Band for you non-rm's)...That's how we heard that President Kennedy had been shot...I immediately got on the 7MC to the bridge to have the captain PLEASE report to Radio immediately...We got the word on the Ham band before our fleet broadcast came in on CW...

I was home on 14 days leave after dropping out of SINS, in Dam Neck.  My father's 59 Chevy needed a new electric wiper assy and I was working on the replacement with the radio on, when I heard the news.

I reported to my 1st & only boat, Sea Robin in NLON late the next evening.

I was in my temporary purgatory - a tincan in WESTPAC when a flash cleartext message came in on the HICOM circuit. It simply said "TO ALLPACFLT. GENERAL QUARTERS."

We remained buttoned up in our various GQ watch stations for what seemed to be a lifetime, knowing past any doubt that we were finally into WWIII and worrying over the uncountable possibilities that existed. We worried about our families back in the States and what in the hell was happening.

Eventually the CO came on the 1MC and announced that Kennedy had been shot. Mixed emotions - no doubt a horrible shock that the President had been shot, but at least we had some comfort that we weren't into WWIII or that our families had been bombed into oblivion.

Maybe another hour, the CO came back on the 1MC and announced that Kennedy was dead, LBJ was sworn in as our President, and CNO announced that this was not some act of war by a foreign power.

Again, undoubtedly more grief mixed with a ton of relief that our families and our Country were safe.

Now, I swear - the most stunning moment of my life then occurred - even to this day ....

We secured from GQ and the CO called for all officers not on watch to assemble in the wardroom. We anticipated some TS update that he had received over the radio circuits that contained more information on what had really happened that day in Dallas.

Yes, he did add a couple of bits of information - essentially trivia in the bigger scheme of what was happening to our world at the moment.

Then he said - and I quote - "Well, if they had to shoot a president, then they got the right one, but if they had to shoot a Kennedy, they got the wrong one!"

My personal politics are significantly different than those espoused by any of the three Kennedy brothers - but the thought of that particular remark still makes me sick to my stomach.

This CO went on the retire out as a VADM.

It was the day after my birthday, which I spent at the Horse & Cow in SF. With hangover, I was standing fire watch in the sonar shack of WW under construction in Vallejo. The RMC came over to tell us the news on his way to inform the CO.

Work stopped. For the next three days, we joined the national mourning via TV.

Then back to work and to sea.

I was waiting on orders at Bainbridge, MD back to the DBs.

I was there then still in class but within a week I was also waiting to be sent back to DBs.

I still remember the Captain coming in to class with tears in his eyes to tell us..
