At random: The first periscope used by the United States Navy was not built for a submarine. The ironclad monitor OSAGE utilized a periscope to discover a Confederate cavalry unit taking cover behind the high banks of the Red River in Arkansas.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MANNING .. .. .. Manning, David McKee EAST GREENBUSH - God took David Manning home on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to be reunited with the family, friends, and beloved kitties who went before him.
Although Alzheimer's disease took so much from David in his final years, it never defined the man he was. His was a life rich in friendship, laughter, loyalty, and 28 years of sobriety. The devotion of his close friends, many of whom stayed in touch until the very end, was a testament to the meaningful friendships he built throughout his life.
David grew up in Sherrill, N.Y., in the 1950s and '60s, making cherished memories at the CAC, skating rink, Sherrill Pond, and Sunset Lake. Those childhood memories were among the last to fade, as was the deep love and respect he held for his parents, Duane and Barbara Manning.
In 1974, he joined the U.S. Navy, graduated from its prestigious Nuclear Power Program, and served aboard the U.S.S. Sand Lance, a nuclear submarine. Remarkably, just days before his passing, David was back aboard that submarine in his mind, working on pipes and giving orders.
Bright and hardworking, David held various positions throughout his career, most recently at the Research Foundation at SUNY, from 2011 to 2023.
An avid photographer, David captured life's beauty through the lens of the cameras he carried everywhere. He loved long rides on his loud Valkyrie motorcycle, attending concerts, watching movies, traveling to visit family and friends, stopping at diners, and snuggling with his cats. He had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor.
In the end, it was life's simplest pleasures that brought him joy, dancing with nursing home staff, mimicking the Three Stooges, and devouring a double cheeseburger.
David's family is forever grateful to the VA hospital staff, and Home-Based Primary Care team, for their extraordinary compassion and care over the past two years. They are the angels who walk among us. Heartfelt thanks also go to his care companions, Mickie, Bill, and Caren, for their kindness and friendship, and to Michael, Danine, Nicole, Sarah, Kay, Krista and Keyma at Evergreen Commons for their care.
David is survived by his sisters, Wendy Cary and Julie Pasquini; brother-in-law, Mike Pasquini; niece, Megan Cary; and nephew, Nicholas Pasquini (Lainey).
