At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

JACKSON .. .. .. Lisbon - Michael J. Jackson, age 85, of Lisbon passed away Jan. 15, 2026, at home. He was born Oct. 26, 1940, in Portsmouth, N.H., to Mary Jane (Morrissey) and Franklin "Stoney" Jackson. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1958.

Michael retired from the U.S. Navy as a senior chief sonar technician after 21 years of service. He then worked for the Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory for 17 years where he was part of a historic triple submarine surfacing at the North Pole in 1986.

Michael was a unique individual, a true N.H. Yankee. He was an avid antiquer; a proponent of "made in America" goods and a loyal Red Sox, Patriots and UConn basketball fan. He leaves behind his loving wife Barbara, children Debbie, Erik (Lisa), Kelly, grandchildren: Abigail, Claire, Jillian and Sophie; sister Carole; brother John (Sue); and several nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be truly missed.

[Ed: Mike & I were stationed together at one time. Unique is a good word.]
