Master and Commander Posts: 1280 Location: NE Florida | Subject: Monday Obits HYNES .. .. .. Hynes, Lester J. ALBANY - Lester John Hynes, of Albany, passed away peacefully after an extended illness, on September 3, 2025. Born on October 17, 1942, to his parents, Thomas and Julia (nee Murphy) Hynes, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Les attended historic PS39 for grammar school and graduated from John Jay High School in 1960. After high school, he worked for a Wall Street Law Firm, Sherman and Sterling, in the Legal Document Department. Joining the Naval Reserve in 1961, he volunteered for the submarine service. From 1963 to 1965, he served aboard the USS Clamagore (SS-343) and qualified in submarine service in 1964, finishing his Naval service in 1968. He returned after active service working at the law firm until being accepted to the Culinary Institute of American in New Haven, Conn. Les married while in school to the love of his life, Monique Janson, in August of 1967. Graduating with honors in 1968, he and Monique managed the Institute of Man and Science in Rensselaerville, N.Y. He was recruited to the University of Albany as Manager of the Faculty Dining Room and Banquet Operations and subsequently promoted to the Director of Cash Sales for the University. Leaving after nearly 20 years, he formed a catering company, The Golden Toque. He also served as Manager of Mallozzi's Banquet House in Schenectady and Chaucer's Banquet House in Clifton Park. Les then became the owner of Farnham's Larkin Restaurant in Albany. Les has been a 50-year Eucharistic Minister to three parishes in the Albany Diocese, on the Dean Advisory Panel at Schenectady County Community College for Culinary Arts, a Mentor for the Mentor Program at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, as well as a Member of the Rotary Club and American Legion Post. Les enjoyed time spent with his family and many vacations in Wells Beach, Maine. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Julie; his wife, Monique, in 2012; and son, Michael, in 2017. He is survived by his brother, Peter (Anne) of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Valerie Hynes of Niskayuna; son, John (Beth) of South Carolina; nephew, Kevin Hynes of Fort Myers, Fla.; granddaughters, Lauren Hynes-Mason (Carl) of Colonie and Rian Hynes of South Carolina; grandson, Devon Purzycki of South Carolina; and great-granddaughter, Gianna Mason of Colonie. GLENN .. .. .. John Kirtley Glenn, Jr. peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on August 22, 2025 due to complications from a fall. John was the devoted husband of fifty nine years to his wife Constance (Connie), father to four sons, John III (Katie), Geofry, Matthew (Meghan), and Joshua (Kate), and proud ‘’Papa” to Ivy, Magdalena, and Atticus. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Ann Blalock, brother-in-law Frank (Pamela) Higgins and sister-in-law Anita Higgins; nieces, nephews and cousin Katherine (Dwayne) Garriss. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Aunt Johnnie Scybert, mother-in-law Patricia Duggan Higgins Barker, father-in-law Frank E. Higgins Sr., brother-in-law George Higgins, and cousin The Reverend James L. Keith. Born on October 31, 1943 to John K. Glenn, Sr. and Vivian Mae (Scybert) Glenn in Fort McPherson, Georgia, John graduated from Georgia Military Academy (Woodward Academy) in 1961, and the US Naval Academy in 1965 with a degree in Nuclear Engineering completing post graduate work in the submarine and nuclear power industries. John proudly served in the ?“quiet service,” the US Naval Submarine service on the USS Lapon 661 for six years, spending an additional final year aboard the USS Dupont. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Presidential Unit Citation. For the following thirty-five years, John worked at Nash Engineering offices in NYC, Houston, TX, Norwalk and Trumbull, CT, meanwhile earning a patent in Heat Recovery in a Liquid Ring Pump Seal Liquid Chiller System. He subsequently became a Manufacturer’s Representative, Marine Division NE, only recently retiring from twelve years in that position. John was known as a ?‘force,’ ready to laugh, with a keen intellect, sharp wit, and for his love of family, country, music, and deep faith. He always had a sense of honor, a ready smile, respectful, kind and friendly outreach. A longtime supporter of community, music and theater, John particularly enjoyed weekly gatherings with friends, Nash ROMEOS luncheons, challenging his mind with sudoku, quiz shows, and exercise?—?bocce, racquetball, walking group, cardio and strength training at the SSC. A member of the Huntington Congregational Church, UCC, he enjoyed serving on multiple committees in various capacities, in addition to selling brats at the Norwalk Oyster Festival, and serving hot dogs at community summer concerts.
