At random: NAUTILUS has long been touted as the first Nuclear powered submarine. In fact, she was the first nuclear powered "anything". Nothing that moves was ever propelled by nuclear power before NAUTILUS.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. 

HOFMANN .. .. .. Donald L. Hofmann, 80, of Albuquerque NM, passed away Aug. 18, 2025, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. Formerly from Rostraver Township and Irwin, PA, Don was the son of the late John and Kathryn Turkovich Hofmann. He was born June 8, 1945, in North Charleroi. A 1963 graduate of Rostraver High School, Don enlisted in the US Navy and was commissioned aboard the ballistic missile submarine USS George Bancroft.
Following a six-year military stint, he earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh while working at Westinghouse. Driven by his love of the Southwest, Don continued his career at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM, where he worked prior to his retirement in 2004.
Along with his devotion to faith and family, Don was dedicated to his passion for Scouting, having helped shape the lives of countless Scouts and leaders in both Pennsylvania and the Great Southwest Council, the latter awarding him the distinguished Silver Beaver Award for adult volunteers. He also served the council as Vice President for Program, executive board member, chairman of the Council Camping Committee, the Chief Campmaster, Scoutmaster and as a member of the National Scout Jamboree Staff.
Until recently, Don was active in the Knights of Columbus Council 14920 and Assembly 3773 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Albuquerque. His life was also greatly enriched by dear friends with whom he gathered bi-weekly at the Monzano Mesa Multigenerational Center.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Hofmann, sister-in-law Linda Hofmann, and brother-in-law David Bittner. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna Genemore Hofmann; a son, David Hofmann of Albuquerque; two daughters, Christine Morgan and husband Kevin, also of Albuquerque, and Lisa Estrada and husband Adrian of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren, Adam Stempeck and wife Olivia and Sara Stempeck Murphy and husband Mikael; two great-grandsons, Johnathan and Nathaniel Stempeck; a sister, Brenda Hofmann Bittner; and many nieces and nephews.


MATHIS .. .. .. Groton - Retired Lt. Commander Stanley William Mathis, 78, passed away Aug. 27, 2025, in Groton. A dedicated serviceman and respected professional, Stanley leaves behind a legacy of commitment and service.
Born Feb. 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, he was the son of Julius and Marjorie Mathis. He earned a bachelor's degree in applied science and systems analysis from Miami University of Ohio in 1972.
Stanley's memory will be cherished by Areatha Mathis-Hillhouse (Mike), Melissa Mathis, Kevin Mathis, Richard Mathis (Mary), Maria Mathis, Rito Mathis, Lito Mathis, and Debbie Mathis; as well as 14 grandchildren, their spouses; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Virginia Mathis; his parents, Julius and Marjorie Mathis; and his grandson Shannon Mathis.
Stanley enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966, and served with distinction for 21 years. Through hard work and leadership, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander before retiring in 1987. His military career reflected his technical expertise and steadfast dedication to his country.
After retiring from the Navy, Stanley continued his service to national defense through a 38-year career at Electric Boat. His contributions there further demonstrated his enduring commitment to excellence and support for those in uniform. In 2001, Stan joined the USSVI and upgraded to Life Members in 2002. He was then inducted into the prestigious Holland Club in 2017. Stanley became very involved in Groton Base and was very instrumental in the leadership of Groton Base and helped establish the Westport Satellite Group. Stanley chaired the very first SUBVETS Thanksgiving and held that position for years. He held many other positions throughout his time with the SUBVETS.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Submarine Veterans Club, 40 School Street, Groton, with a reception to follow. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the guestbook.


MYERS .. .. .. Torpedo Man Chief (TMC(SS)) Stephen Doran Myers, USN-Ret., passed away August 22, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Enid, OK on August 12, 1945, the eldest of four children to Rev. Doran Francis Myers and Myrtle Jean Myers. Steve graduated from high school in Pratt, KS in 1963 and enlisted in the Navy in December, 1963, and served in the Navy for 20 years and 6 months. He enlisted to play in the Navy Band, but wound up in the Torpedo Room where he served on many different submarines: USS Valador (’64-65), USS Salmon (’65-’68), USS Seadragon (’70-’73), USS Darter (’73-’77), USS Gato (’80-’82), and USS Permit (’82-’84). In between sub assignments (which included time in the Vietnam theater of operations), he served shore duty on both coasts. He retired from active duty from the USS Permit stationed at Mare Island, but continued to serve another 10 years in the Navy Reserves.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Doran Francis Myers and Myrtle Jean Myers, his daughter Roberta Steeves and many uncles and aunts. Survivors left behind are his wife Irene Erika Myers, his three children: son Stephen Myers, a lieutenant in the Vilant Personal Crime Unit in Texas, daughter Jennifer Bookout of Alabama, and daughter Correna Garrison of Oklahoma City, OK. Also survived by Erika’s three children: Daniel A. Tuziak of Las Vegas, Michele A. (Ron) Tuziak-Buehrer of Vallejo, and Paula Tuziak of American Canyon. Also siblings: sister Kathy (Perk) Johnson, Fernandina Beach, FL, brother Thomas (Beverly) Myers of Florence CO, and Ruth (Craig) Moore of Oklahoma City, OK. Plus six grandchildren: Erin and Josh Warren, Daniele Procuniar, Taylor Myers, Chandler and Sarah Steeves and 2 great-grandchildren.
Steve met Erika (on a blind date!) in 1973 while living in Poway, CA, and serving in San Diego. They were married on September 20, 1975, in Poway. Erika followed Steve to every new duty station until he retired from Mare Island. After retirement, Steve worked in civil service on Mare Island and at McClelland AFB near Sacramento. He also drove a truck for a tile company for 8 years. During this time, he learned how to square dance and was a square dance caller for many years (his email address was even CallerSteve@ !). Erika and Steve also enjoyed camping throughout Northern California. They were married one month short of their Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary and Steve celebrated his 80th birthday shortly before his passing.

ROSS .. .. .. Michael J. Ross Sr., 83, of Mount Joy, passed away on Friday, September 05, 2025 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Uniontown, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Dorchnic) Ross. Michael was the husband of the late Sandra L. (Sutter) Ross who passed away on October 31, 2017.
Michael was a graduate of South Park High School in South Park, PA and later received his BS in nuclear technology from New York State University. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1960 to 1968. Michael started his career at Shaw, Stone, and Webster Inc. in Baton Rouge, LA. He spent 34 years at with General Public Utilities at Three Mile Island before his retirement in 2007. Michael was a member of the American Legion Post 466 in Marietta, Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, and the United States Submarine Veterans Keystone Base USSIV. He enjoyed boating, hunting, time at Raystown Lake, and most of all spending time with his family.
Michael is survived by two daughters, Debra Beach, wife of Keith of Mount Joy and Tracey Ross, wife of Scott Gerberich of Manheim; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a daughter in law, Sonia Ross of Maytown.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Ross Jr.; his step-father, Frederick Long; and a half sister, LuAnn Little.


DROWN .. .. .. Fred E. Drown NORTHFIELD — Fred E. Drown Passed away Saturday May 24, 2025. There will be a "Grave Side" Navy Military Service on Friday September 19th, 2025 @ 11am @ in the "Memory Garden" @ the VT Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph VT... Fred was a proud member of the VT Submarine Vets. He always took pride in jumping to help everyone where he could & however he could. So, in his honor in lieu of flowers we ask that donations in memory of Fred Drown be sent to the VT Submarine Vets..


RYEL .. .. .. James E. Ryel, 86, of the Town of Salisbury, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday night, September 3, 2025 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, New York.
He was born on July 4, 1939 in Copenhagen, New York and was the son of the late, Eugene and Lois (Ball) Ryel. James was educated at Copenhagen High School and graduated with the Class of 1958.
On November 4, 1959, James enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the submarine the USS Irex (SS482) as an electrician. After four years, he was honorably discharged on November 1, 1959 as an IC2 (SS), E-5.
After his military service, James was employed by several places including Kraft Foods in South Rutland, NY, Queen Farms in Copenhagen, NY, and caretaker and gravedigger for Riverside Cemetery, also in Copenhagen, NY. His love for the Bible and God brought him to Christian Lake Bible Conference Ministry located in the Town of Salisbury, NY, where he volunteered his time and became the caretaker of the conference center. He was also was a logger at the center for his good friend, Don Webb. He retired after many years of service.
James enjoyed reading, taking walks in his sock feet on wet dew filled grass, and watching and feeding birds. His most precious time was spent in the company of the Congdon and Bilger family who became his family. James enjoyed traveling all over with them including trips to Outer Banks, North Carolina, Deadwood, North Dakota to visit Wild Bill Hadcock and Calamity Jane’s gravesites, Lake George, NY Trips and swimming with the kids in the jacuzzi, visiting the Amelia Earhart Museum and walking through the submarine the USS Nautilus at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT.
James had many adventures over the years with his family and was affectionately called Grandpa by them. Over the years, James has touched many lives with his kind heart and ability to love all. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his family, the Rodney and Cheryl Congdon of Salisbury, NY; grandchildren, Jules and Janet Bilger of Salisbury, NY; great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Sophia, Savannah, Serenity, Lliam, Hannah, Noah, Amelia and Roman; a great-great granddaughter, Eliza; close friends, Larry and Bonnie Morotti, Mark Helmer, Pastor Duane Holmes, Carl Veil, Ben Wilkerson, Corey and Nancy Banks, Alan and Melissa Webb and their families; cousins; and many friends throughout the years from the Christian Lake Bible Conference Center.
He was predeceased by his parents and an infant sibling.
