At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

CAMPBELL .. .. .. Bluffton, S.C. - Orville Campbell, 92, formerly of Lisbon, died Feb. 14, 2025, at his home in Bluffton, S.C. He was born April 12, 1932, in Conshohocken, Pa., the eldest child of Orville Restbrook Campbell and Martha Louise (Slifer) Campbell.

Orville met his beloved wife, Janet Aleatha Parry Campbell, while on leave early in his Navy career. They eloped Dec. 18, 1953, in Elkton, Md. They waited until after Janet finished nursing school and renewed their vows "in Our Father's House (church)" Sept. 11, 1954, in Norristown, Pa. She died from the virus (COVID-19) in 2021.

Orville worked in the steel mills before joining the Navy. He joined the Navy in 1950 serving for 20 years. He was a Korean War Veteran. He served on battleships and submarines as a ship's cook. There he earned the nickname Soupy. He was a Plank Owner for the USS James Monroe and the USS Francis Scott Key. He would often say, "The Navy saved my life." After leaving the Navy, he worked at Electric Boat in Groton. He was a ship's supervisor working on the next generation of submarines!

A lifelong member of Freemasonry, Orville joined the Key West Lodge in 1955. Later he became an active member of the Somerset Lodge in Norwich. Another community endeavor was as a scoutmaster for many years at Boy Scout Troop 1 in Norwich. He once led the boys on an infamous 50-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail.

In retirement, he bought a motorhome. He and his wife, along with their Yorkie, Mutley, went to see America! Together, they visited the continental 48 states, Alaska and parts of Canada. They enjoyed playing golf and going to ship reunions - catching up with old friends and shipmates.

Orville is survived by his daughters, Kathy Jane Willard of Bluffton, S.C., and Kimberly Ann Lang of Lisbon; grandchildren, Cale Campbell, Nina Lynn Shank, Joe (Jenny) Willard, Beckham (Charlotte) Lang and Meredith Lang; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Oliver, Jack, Coda and Henna. I was unable to find other obituaries since all news outlets were giving space to this story:

At least six people have died after a submarine carrying dozens of tourists sank off the coast of Egypt.
A further nine have been injured, four critically, in the disaster which happened around a kilometre off the holiday resort of Hurghada this morning. The tourist submarine, named Sindbad, had been carrying around 44 international passengers, including children, at the time of the sinking, which took place off the marina of the Sindbad Club Hotel.
A further nine have been injured, four critically, in the disaster which happened around a kilometre off the holiday resort of Hurghada this morning.
Rescue services have so far managed to save 29 people, according to a statement released by the Red Sea governorate.
Egyptian officials have said at least six are dead while Moscow's embassy in Cairo says all passengers were Russian with four of its citizens among the deceased.
According to Russian media, the death toll may be as high nine with unconfirmed reports claiming that the vessel collided with a reef and 'depressurised' at 65ft which caused it to sink.
Some 21 ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the incident, and have been transporting the injured to local hospitals including Al-Kawthar, due to the severity of their conditions.
Reports have claimed the passengers are 'of different nationalities' but in a post to Facebook, the Russian embassy in Egypt said that all of the tourists were Russian.
