MOON .. .. .. Dr. Calvin Moon, 100, of North Hanover, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born in Yardville, Dr. Moon was a lifetime area resident and attended Bordentown High School. After graduating in 1942, he spent a year at Rutgers on a State scholarship. From 1943-46, Dr. Moon served in the US Navy Submarine Service, where he served as Petty Officer First Class Radar Operator on the USS Razorback Submarine in WWII which played an integral role in five battle patrols in the Pacific Theater. He received two NJ Distinguished Service Medals for his service. Following his discharge, he returned to Rutgers and graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Agricultural Research. He then went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania graduating Cum Laude with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (VMD) in 1952. 

Dr. Moon was a well-respected veterinarian practicing in New Jersey for 47 years. He began his career at Wood Veterinary Hospital and later founded Hamilton Veterinary Hospital. He also helped establish Columbus Central Veterinary Hospital with his associates and served as the Medical Director there for 20 years and was a diplomate with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. 

Dr. Moon was an active member of his community. He received the Chesterfield Township, Father of the Year award, served on Northern Burlington Jr/Sr High School Board of Ed, was a Scout Master for Troop 55 in Crosswicks, and was a 35-year member, former past president, and Paul Harris Fellow of the Bordentown Rotary Club. A lifelong hunter, Dr Moon was a member of the South Branch Hunting Club since 1978; was a Ham radio operator for Mercer County Emergency Service; and a member of the Rutgers Oral History Society. He was the Base Commander of the New Jersey South Submarine Veterans and Honorary Life Member of the USS Razorback Association. 

Calvin is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, June Ann Moon; sister, Phyllis Dinardo; children, Catherine McClure, Joseph Moon, Mary Kandebo, and Jennifer Goodman; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 
A visitation will be held Friday, September 13th from 12-2pm at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown. Interment will follow in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.

SHIELDS .. .. .. JC. Shields 1/1/38 – 7/25/24 JC. Shields passed away peacefully at the VA hospital in Yountville California. He served in the Navy on a submarine, the SS Redfin for 2 years. JC. moved to Lake county in 1976, he was the owner and operator of a plumbing company “Redbud Plumbing” for many years. JC. had a passion for breeding and raising Quarter horses and Paint horses. He owned a horse facility and spent many years raising horses and spending time with friends and family at his ranch. JC. is survived by his sister, Glenda Mitchell, four children Keith Shields, Jeff Shields, Angie Allen, and Pamela Walls, nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held October 19th, 2024 at the Brick hall in Lower lake.


HELM .. .. ..Joseph Dean “J.D.” Helm, 66, of Hinton passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
 He was born of September 6, 1957 in Bradenton, FL and was the son of Joseph Helm and Bernadean Bauer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy stationed aboard the nuclear submarine USS Patrick Henry.
 Besides his parents he was preceded in death by siblings Roger Lee Meador, Kayetta Cannon and Rose Marie Kyle.
 He is survived by his siblings, Edward Meador and wife Jo, William Meador, David Cobb and wife Teresa, Darlene Cannon, Samuel Bauer and wife Mimi and John Bauer and wife Lynne.


CREWS .. .. .. Larry David Crews, 79, of Boonville, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, at the W.G.Hefner V.A. Hospital in Salisbury. He was born on Oct. 15, 1944, in Harmony to the late Roy and Eva Mae Crews. Larry graduated from West Yadkin High School before proudly serving in the US Navy from 1965-1971, where he trained at the U.S. Navy Submarine School in Saratoga Springs, NY. He dedicated his career to working as a Navy Machinist Mate and later with Chesapeake Corporation and Crews Ironworks. A man of faith, Larry was a member of Hunting Creek Friends. Known for his proud, loving, and caring personality, he was deeply family-oriented and always ready to lend a helping hand. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Crews; sons, Erik Crews (husband, Terry May) and Bryan Crews (wife, Laura Crews); sisters, Janice Schuyler, Judy Davis, Susan Macemore, and Missie Flannigan (wife, Barbara Turner); brother, Jeff Crews (wife, Ann Crews). He leaves behind eight nieces and nephews, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Steve Crews, and brother-in-law, Dickie Schuyler. Larry cherished his hobbies, which included cheering for Starmount High School football, riding his Harley, caring for his dogs, playing Santa at Christmas, and attending meetings with fellow blacksmiths. He was Commander of the Yadkin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10346 for 10 years as well as Honor Guard Captain. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A Celebration of Life Service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Gentry Family Chapel with Rev. Chris Flannigan officiating. Full Military Honors will be provided by Yadkin VFW Post 10346 Memorial Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Larry's Memory to the Yadkin VFW Post 10346, c/o David Webb, Quartermaster, Price Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020.
