At random: In 1921, a United States submarine, the R-14, having run out of fuel at sea while looking for the missing tug USS Conestoga, rigged sails from blankets and hammocks sewn together. Bunk frames were used for yardarms and booms. The torpedo loading king post for a fore mast, the torpedo loading boom for a mizzen mast and the telescoping radio mast, for the main mast. The R-14 sailed 100 miles in five days to the port of Hilo, T.H. at a speed of two knots. It has been reported in March 2016 that the Conestoga has been located 3 miles off Southeast Farallon Island, probably sinking with-in a day of leaving port. All hands lost.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MAUDER .. .. .. Christopher E. Mauder passed away suddenly on July 21, 2024, while enduring a courageous battle with cancer.
Chris was born in Dearborn, MI in 1972. A veteran of the US Navy, he served as a petty officer in the submarine service, primarily on the USS SILVERSIDES (SSN 679). He received numerous citations and commendations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. After his military service, Chris worked in various fields, eventually making his way to Newport News Shipyard, where he built nuclear submarines. He was currently employed with Eaton manufacturing in Richmond, VA. A widower, he lost his beloved wife Jessica in 20 l 7. They had two children, Brady and Mackenzie.
Those that knew Chris know his strong love of family. They also know he had a keen wit and intellect. He was always reading to keep up with the latest in everything and could give you facts and insights into any topic. A huge Michigan and Detroit Lions football fan, he always wore their caps. He also gave new meaning to casual attire, with his collection of tropical shirts and flip-flops as his standard uniform.
This is what he would have wanted to be remembered for: most of all, he loved his children Brady and Mackenzie, along with Wesley and Sabrina from an earlier marriage. He wanted his children to remember the kind, thoughtful, funny, determined, and brave guy he was, and that he was always devoted to them.
Christopher is survived by his children, Brady Mauder, Mackenzie Mauder, Wesley Mauder and Sabrina Mauder; his father, Mickey Mauder; stepfather, Don Andreozzi; his brother, Dominic Andreozzi; and sisters, Michelle Driver and Nicole Andreozzi. Also surviving him are father and mother-in-law, Alton and Laurie Catlett; and his many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, including Ashley Catlett and Matt Toper, Lindsey Catlett and Mary Jo McCoy, Annie Catlett, Angie and Mark Wharam, Allyson Wharam and Ben Michaels, Emily Wharam, Rebecca Bolton, Therese Currie, Susie Bone and Curt Bone.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Williamsburg Memorial Park on Saturday, July 27 at 3 p.m., 130 King William Dr., Williamsburg, VA.

MICKELSON .. .. ..Walter Andrew Mickelson 86, passed from our loving arms to those of our Savior on July 21, 2024.
Walter was born on September 30, 1937, in Fallon, Nevada to Marion Walter Mickelson and Mildred Harriet Draper Mickelson. He was well loved by his oldest brother Merton "Mert" and sister, Etta Mae.

Walter graduated from Churchill County High School. He then went on to get a Bachelor's degree, in Chemistry, from the University of Nevada, in Reno Nevada. He attended the Naval Officers Candidate School in Rhode Island and Submarine Training School in Connecticut. This training gave him the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy. He was the navigator of the USS Catfish.

While attending the University of Nevada, Walter had many opportunities to travel home to see his family and friends in Fallon. He took his girlfriend, Pat, to a Stake Conference in Sparks, Nevada. Pat invited several of her friends to ride with them to the Stake Conference, one of which was her best friend Donna Mae Lewis. About 6 months later Walter had a new girlfriend named Donna, which he married on June 13, 1960 in the Idaho Falls, Idaho Temple.

As a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, he had many opportunities to travel. He traveled to Bermuda, Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii and a few other places that were classified. Walter enjoyed seeing the world.

He and Donna moved frequently in their early years together. They lived in China Lake, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco California. They lived in Fallon, Nevada for a short time then moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1964. In Idaho Falls he was hired on at the INEL where he worked in management at the WCF CALCINER. Throughout his career he served in management positions at the INEL. He retired from the INEL in 2001. In fall of 1974 he moved, for the last time, to Riverside, Idaho. They have happily lived in their home for the last 50 years.

He had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed camping with his family, fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was a pilot and owned his own airplane. He enjoyed the beauty of the great outdoors and often took trips with Donna. He often talked about his ability to navigate land, air and sea. In the quiet hours at home he enjoyed reading and watching football.

Walter was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions throughout his life. While in the Navy he served as the Chaplin on the USS Catfish submarine. He particularly enjoyed his years as Elders Quorum President. He and Donna served a service mission at the LDS Employment Center in 2002. Walter and Donna were called to work in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple in 2004. He had a strong testimony of the gospel. He taught his family to trust in the Savior and stand firm in their beliefs.

Walter is survived by his wife of 64 years Donna; his twin daughters Barbara (David) Hansen of Blackfoot, and Beverly (Cameron) Anderson of Blackfoot; his sons Ross (Kathy) Mickelson of Highland, Utah, Bryan (JoAnn) Mickelson of Logan, Utah, Robert (Royelle) Mickelson of Elko, Nevada, and Dana (Shelley) Mickelson of Blackfoot. He has 29 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Merton Marion Mickelson and Etta Mae Matteucci; and two grandsons TJ Mickelson and Matthew Gerald Mickelson.

McFARLAND .. .. .. James T. McFarland of Upper Darby passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024 and was reunited with his loving wife of 53 years, Kathy (nee Sheerin), who predeceased him in death 7 short months ago.
Jim was the son of the late Thomas and Kathryn McFarland and was born in Washington D.C. He grew up in Drexel Hill and graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in 1963.
Jim was a proud United States Navy veteran who served on the U.S.S. Jack, the first commissioned nuclear submarine, from 1966-1969. Jim was a self-taught guitar player who enjoyed sharing his love of folk music with his children and grandchildren. He nightly lulled his kids to sleep with John Prine songs and then continued sharing his love of music with all who would listen. He enjoyed singing songs around the campfire in the summers and strumming the ukulele with all of his grandchildren.
Jim was as generous as he was cantankerous. He would always have a spare dollar or two handy in his car for times he encountered someone asking for help. He quietly helped local families in need, allowing presents to be bought for children at Christmastime and some families to have vehicles. Jim didn't hold back on his opinions, letting you know what he thought about a topic. He also freely shared his feelings on your opinion as well. He was never afraid to speak his mind and never hesitated to admit when he was wrong and ask for forgiveness, a quality he modeled and instilled in his family. He loved fiercely and will be forever missed by many.
