I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

GLADDEN .. .. .. Raymond Allen Gladden, 77, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at Franklin County Rehab Center after suffering a stroke in early June. Throughout his recovery, Ray fought courageously every day with the hope of returning home to the shores of Lake Champlain, a place that brought him immense peace and happiness.
Born on May 4, 1949, Ray dedicated his life to serving his country, his family, and his community. At 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving in the U.S. Submarine Corps, Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet, aboard the USS George Washington. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for the Central Vermont Railway before beginning a long and fulfilling career with the Burlington Electric Department, where he remained until his retirement in 2014.
On May 19, 1973, Ray married the love of his life, Karen Benoit. Together they built a life centered on family and raised two children, Timothy and Kate, who were the pride and joy of his life.
Ray's greatest passion was his family. He devoted countless hours to coaching Timothy in hockey and Kate in softball, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Whether he was behind the bench, in the stands, or cheering from the sidelines, he was his family's biggest supporter. That same enthusiasm extended to his nieces and nephews, whom he loved watching compete in sports and other activities. He never missed an opportunity to encourage them and celebrate their accomplishments.
Outside of family, Ray was an avid sports fan and golfer. A proud member of the Champlain Country Club, he celebrated one of his favorite achievements when he recorded a hole-in-one in 2013.
When Karen retired in 2015, the couple fulfilled their dream of settling into a home on the shores of Lake Champlain. Together they embraced retirement, enjoying the beauty of the lake, quiet days together, and the simple pleasures of the place they loved most.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Karen Gladden; his children, Timothy Gladden and Kate Gladden; his brother, Bernie Gladden and his wife, Sue; his sister, Susan Hurst his sister, Barb Farnsworth and her husband, Dave; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Paul and Mary Pat Roche, Mike McGinn, and Linda Benoit; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Gladden; his stepmother, Reba Gladden; his sisters, Jeanne Doliber and Norma Emerson his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Susan and Tom O'Brien, Richard Benoit, and Joanne McGinn.
Ray will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his quiet strength, his dedication to those he loved his service to his country, and the countless hours he spent supporting others from the sidelines. His kindness, loyalty, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

WISE .. .. .. MMCS(SS) Richard O. 'Rick' Wise, USN Ret., now on Eternal Patrol.
With great sadness I report on Monday afternoon, 27 July 2026, our friend and shipmate Richard O. 'Rick' Wise, 78, departed on Eternal Patrol at MUSC Charleston. He joined the Navy in 1965 and retired in 1989. Rick joined USSVI / Charleston Base in 2002 and became a life member of USSVI National and Charleston Base in 2004. He was a member of the Holland Club qualifying in 1971 on USS DANIEL BOONE SSBN-629. Other duty stations were USS VON STEUBEN SSBN-642, USS NATHAN HALE SSBN-623 and USS WOODROW WILSON SSBN-624 as the Bull Nuke. Additionally he served on USS FRANK CABLE AS-40. His shore duty commands were NAS MERIDAN MS, and NUCPWRSCOL ORLANDO FL. He retired after his tour on the WOODROW WILSON. In addition to his Life Membership in USSVI he was a Member of FRA Branch 269 joining in 2007 and a Life Member of DAV Swamp Fox Chapter 17.
From the time Rick joined Charleston Base in 2002, he was constantly active as a member and an officer in the Base. He has served as Base Commander, Base Secretary, Chief of the Boat, Public Affairs Officer, Comptroller, Newsletter Editor, Amberjack/Lost Boats Memorial Coordinator, NPS Legacy Awards Coordinator, Little David POC, Roving Reporter and Non-Nuclear Historian and he was always ready to pitch in and help any of us whenever it was needed.
