You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. JANS .. .. .. James Edward Jans, 83, passed away February 24, 2026. Born June 4, 1942, in Waterloo, Iowa, he was the son of Edward and Jennie Jans. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Bridget "Katy" Jans; his sister, Janice Goodman; and his nephew, Paul Parsons. He later made his home in Tombstone and Benson, Arizona. James proudly served 21 years in the United States Navy's elite submarine force, rose to the rank of Lieutenant from E-1 as a "Mustanger" and retired. As a Sonar Technician, he served aboard the USS Halibut (SSN-587), whose historic Cold War missions were later chronicled in the book Blind Man's Bluff, for which he received the Navy's highest peacetime medal, the Legion of Merit. Following his military retirement, he worked 15 years at Northrop Grumman and seven years at Ace Hardware. He was also the author of Benson: The Winter Route 66, reflecting his love of Arizona history. He is survived by his son, Kenneth Anthony Jans; his daughter, Bridget Kathleen Winkler; his daughter-in-law, Dora Jans; his sisters, Carol (Alan) Lewis and Kathy Castlebury; his granddaughter, Amanda Jones; his great-grandson, Josiah Jones; his six nieces, Cheri Olds, Kimberly De La Vara, Michelle DiGiacomo, Jenna Raynor, Jodeen Boncquet, and Diane Carroll; and his three nephews, Joel Garmon, Jeff Garmon, and Michael Carroll. Military honors will be held March 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sierra Vista Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Fair winds and following seas. SHELTON .. .. .. James Maurice Shelton passed away on February 22, 2026, at his home in San Angelo, Texas. He was born July 27, 1924 in Collinwood, Tennessee to parents Beulah and Arch Shelton. In 1950 Maurice married Lucy Vise in Martin, TN. They were both students at the Martin campus of the University of Tennessee. Maurice and Lucy moved to Texas the day they were married and began a life together that spanned 57 years which included traveling and many hours spent at their ranch in Concho County. Maurice and Lucy were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. Recognized for his work with sheep and goats at the San Angelo Agrilife Research Center and known to many as Dr. Shelton, Maurice held a Ph.D. in Genetics from Texas A&M University. He served a distinguished career as a researcher in Animal Science specializing in sheep and goats and retired as Professor Emeritus with Texas A&M. Prior to moving to San Angelo he worked at research stations in Sonora and McGregor, Texas and in the country of Lebanon. Throughout his career Dr. Shelton travelled to 64 countries teaching, consulting and speaking at conferences. Maurice remained very proud of his service in World War II. As a Navy seaman in the submarine service, he was in Tokyo Harbor at the signing of the armistice ending the war in the Pacific. He is survived by four sons Larry Shelton, Dr. Michael and Liz Shelton, Donald and Cindy Shelton all of Odessa and Andrew Shelton of San Angelo. Grandchildren include Nathan Bieber, Christie Bieber, Jessica Bermes, Marvin Smith IV, Austin Shelton and Perry Shelton. Maurice is survived by three siblings, Sue Perkins, Jane Pinkerton and David Shelton who live in Tennessee and Alabama. EWTON .. .. .. Billy Charles Ewton, Jr. 63, of Whitesboro, TX, passed away Sunday morning, February 22, 2026, at Texhoma Medical Center in Denison. He was born in Baldwin Park, CA to Billy & Nell Light Ewton. He was a graduate of Denton High School Class of 1981. He received his Associate Welding Degree from TSTC of Waco. Billy enlisted in the United States Navy on February 21, 1984. He went on to serve six years on board the nuclear class submarine USS Michigan 727. He was Honorably Discharged on February 20, 1990. He married Galen Jo Noles on April 5th, 1991, at Elm Ridge Methodist Church in Navo, Tx. After the Navy, he worked at Baxter and Sons Elevator, Denton Electric and Goin Electric, which he was an owner/partner. Billy then worked for the City of Denton for 21 years, rising to the position of Assistant Building Official. During his life, Billy filled holes he never had to: as a father, a brother, an uncle, mentor, and friend. He did this simply because that’s who he was. Billy is survived by his wife, Galen Noles Ewton of Whitesboro: sons, Brady and wife Kayla Ewton, Beau and wife Kelby Ewton; grandchildren, Kolter and Bennie Kay Ewton, and soon to be grandson Baxter Ewton; parent, Nell Rankin; brothers, Matthew Wayne Ewton, Rocky Ewton, and Josh Ewton. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Ewton Sr, stepfather B.L. Rankin, brother, Dee Ewton and father-in-law Benny Noles. | ||
