Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted. I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. BALLOW .. .. .. Alan David Ballow, 80, of Isle of Palms, died unexpectedly on August 2, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, Alan grew up in Vineland, New Jersey, with his parents Albert and Selma (Goldstein) Ballow and siblings Faith Silnutzer and Elayne Weinstein. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and proudly served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Fleet, which gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the world. Alan and his wife made their home on Isle of Palms, where he embraced an active coastal life. He loved sailing his Hobie Cat, kayaking, windsurfing, paddle boarding, biking, and playing table tennis. He was actively involved with surf clubs, including doing the surf report just prior to his death. He is survived by his devoted wife Beverly (Painter) Ballow, his stepson Ethan Chase and his wife Susan (Moran) Chase, his beloved grandchildren Rebecca and Emily, his sister Elayne, and several nieces and nephews. TULLIS .. .. .. Robert Kridler Tullis III, age 75, entered eternal rest on the morning of Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. He had been a former patient at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. Born April 14, 1950 in Berwyn, Illinois, his late parents were Robert Kridler Tullis, Jr. And Catherine (Guidice) Tullis. He was followed by siblings William and Sandra, both surviving, and predeceased by siblings Susan, Steven and Diane. Educated in Chicagoland Elementary and High Schools, he went on to receive two Bachelor of Science degrees, the first in Physics from Milliken University in Decatur, Illinois, the second from the New School For Social Research in New York City, NY for Human Resource Management. From 1973 to 1982, Robert was proudest of his service in the United States Navy. Among his many duties was his service aboard the USS Flying Fish SSN-673 nuclear submarine. It was at a surfacing mission to the North Pole where upon the ice, he met and received his medals during a ceremony from none other than Santa Claus himself. Pictures exist to prove the fact. A man of varied talents and capabilities, he strove to always be of service to the public. His major employments included Commonweath Edison, Illinois American Water, The Burlington Northern Railroad, and the Chicago Metro Transit System. Serving as Water Commissioner for the Village of Diamond, Illinois, he earned Class A licenses with the Illinois EPA and went on to own and operate DWS – Diamond Water Services, servicing both the village's water and sewage treatment facilities. He enjoyed retail pursuits with Sears, Roebuck & Company, Osco Drug, and Walgreens as Assistant Manager and Pharmacy Technician. Ever civic minded, Robert enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of the Grundy County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Morris, Illinois. In addition, he was a certified First Aide, CPR, and Emergency Response Instructor. He was a lifeguard and swimming instructor with both the Decatur and Naperville, Illinois YMCA's. Beginning in 1983, Robert served as acting Den Father and Cub Master with the Coal City, Illinois division of the Boy Scouts of America. He was ever present as chaperone and treasurer of the Coal City School Music Boosters. On March 21, 1970 he wed Cynthia Marie Kirkpatrick in Minnesota. In addition to Cynthia, he is survived by his three children from that union; Rhendy, Robert IV, and Randall, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. On January 28, 1984 Robert married Felicia Anne Schedlbauer in Morris, Illinois and became Father and Dad to his beloved daughter Leslie Anne Allen. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by son in law Jack Steven Allen and grandchildren Keely and Corey Allen and Abbigayle Rowton. Additional immediate family members include his brother and sister in law Keith and Geraldine Schedlbauer, niece and nephew Andrea and Larry Fort and their son Gavin. A resident of the Village of Hagaman, NY since 2016, much appreciated memorial contributions in Robert's name may be made to the Village of Hagaman Fire Department. Without fail, with urgency and efficiency, the department responded to every call in Robert's time of need. SIEWERT .. .. .. The family of Mark William Siewert, 69, of Southport, NC, sadly announces that he was laid to rest in his hometown of Coloma, MI, Saturday September 6, 2025. He passed away August 23 after a courageous battle with non-smoking related COPD. He had recently been placed on the Temple University, Philadelphia, lung transplant list. He was born in Marion, Ohio to William and Elenora (nee Devay) Siewert. They moved to Coloma where the family had a small fruit and berry farm. His young life was idyllic; he and his sister Kim rode their horses through neighboring farms and the dunes of Lake Michigan. He hunted with his Dad and his cousins. Oscar his beagle was the dog he loved most. After high school he entered the United States Navy. He served with distinction as a nuclear propulsion plant operator. He went on to get an undergraduate degree in Physics, with honors, at Illinois Institute of Technology. Through General Electric's Edison Program, he earned an MS degree in Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked with GE in San Jose, then relocated to their offices in Wilmington. He also had the opportunity to work with NASA on the Space Shuttle and Jupiter Icy Moons programs. He loved the outdoor life in California; he and his wife Phyllis first met on the shores of Ano Nuevo, where he was a docent for the elephant seal sanctuary. His parents and sister preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, many cousins, nieces, nephews, a grand niece, as well as his supportive and loving friends, submarine vets at USSV Cape Fear, and GE colleagues. CAMPBELL .. .. .. Dr. John Brooks Campbell died on Saturday, August 30th of pancreatic cancer. He was born in 1947 in Seminole, Oklahoma, the first-born son of Jack and Dorothy Campbell. As the child of an oilfield engineer who was transferred frequently, John attended twelve schools by the time he graduated from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He joined the Navy during the Vietnam era, attending the Navy electronics school in San Diego before he was deployed on submarines and submarine tenders as a electronics technician. Upon release from active duty he attended the University of Oklahoma and after three years of study, he was accepted by the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he returned to San Diego, where he had left his heart many years earlier, and completed his pathology internship at the University of California San Diego. John resided in San Diego until his death. John started his own pathology lab, Pacific Pathology Inc, soon after he finished his pathology internship. He continued to run the pathology lab until his passing and considered his staff there as extended family. He also was in the Naval Reserve in San Diego for 15 years as a Commander (O-5). Besides his business, John was integral in the dermatology community of Mohs surgeons, doing both consulting work and QA evaluation of Mohs cases. He gave lectures at the Mohs conferences and taught locally, lecturing and running small group presentations promoting interactive discussion. He is described by his contemporaries as a meticulous pathologist and an innovator in the way he approached Mohs surgery. Married twice, John was the father of three much-loved children- Jeff, Charles and Brooke. He volunteered generously in their school-related activities and continued volunteering with the Gateways Summer School program long after their graduations. John was an active guy – an avid advocate of physical activity, at the gym or swimming and biking. He was also very social, having a years-long standing Thursday night dinner with the “YMCA guys”, going with friends to wine tasting, seeing the Pageant of the Masters and camping, among many other activities. John is survived by his children, ex-wives Suzanne Clark and Amalia S. Campbell, three siblings, six nieces/nephews, seven cousins and innumerable treasured friends. | ||
