At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

HARDING .. .. .. Wayne M. Harding, 86, of Glastonbury, CT and Hebron, NH, beloved husband of Barbara L. Harding for 60 years, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 24. Born June 7, 1938 in DuBois, PA, son of the late S. Ray and Rachael Harding, he lived in Glastonbury for the past 47 years and shared his time in Hebron, NH for the past 25 years.
After graduation from high school in New Jersey, he graduated from Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in 1958. He worked as a Foreman for Asplundh Tree Expert Company before joining the US Navy Submarine Service in 1961. After graduating from Sub School in Groton, CT, he served in the USS Segundo SS398, a diesel-electric powered submarine, and traveled to various countries including Australia, China, Russia, Korea, Philippine Islands and many islands in the South Pacific. He graduated from the US Navy's Nuclear Power School and served in the USS Ulysses S. Grant SSBN631, a Nuclear Powered Submarine, making various deterrent patrols during the Cold War in the Pacific while operating from Guam. He was then attached to the Fast Attack USS Sargo SSN 583 in Pearl Harbor, and was honorably discharged in 1967. While in the Navy, he married Barbara L. Van Der Beek of Old Tappan, NJ in 1964; a friend, neighbor, and love of his life who joined him in Hawaii and taught school during the years they lived there.
Besides his wife, Wayne is survived by their three sons, their wives, and six wonderful grandchildren. Sons and daughters-in-law are Don Harding (Katharine) of New York City, Dave Harding (Judy) of Glastonbury, CT., and Dan Harding (Nicole) of Narragansett, RI. Grandchildren: Reece, Brooke, Molly, Matt, Myles, and Graham Harding. He is also survived by his brother Sam Harding and wife Deborah of Clemson, SC., as well as three brothers-in law and their wives: Bill Van Der Beek (Marcia) of Okatie, SC, Jim Van Der Beek of Oxford, CT, Dave Van Der Beek (Diana) of Okatie, SC, cousins, 15 nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. He was predeceased by two sisters-in-law: Karen Van Der Beek and Melinda Van Der Beek.
Following his Navy service, he worked for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company for 32 years, and attained the title of Assistant Chief Engineer. He retired in 1999. During his HSB career, he, his wife Barbara, and family lived in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, and Missouri, prior to settling in Glastonbury, CT, and working in the Hartford Home Office Engineering Department. Wayne was active with his wife Barbara in the churches they attended, was a member of the Shriners, and a 32nd Degree Mason for the past 53 years. He received various awards as a member of the US Navy Rifle and Pistol team in Pearl Harbor, was a Life Time Member of the Groton, CT Base Submarine Veterans' Club, Submarine Force Holland Club, and a full member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing the waters in Oregon. He loved spending time with his family camping, and cherished the times he and his wife would sail on the lake and travel throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Wayne lived a good life. His family and friends remember him as a happy, welcoming, caring, and kind person with an enjoyable sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. He will always be in our hearts.
Calling hours for family and friends will be Friday, November 15, from 2 to 4 P.M. at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron, Ave. A Memorial Service to celebrate Wayne's life, will be held Saturday, November 16 at 11:30 A.M. at First Church of Christ, 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Wayne's memory may be made to Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or Union Masonic Lodge #79, Secretary, Russ Vaiden, 27 Main Street, Bristol, NH 03222.

PETTIT .. .. .. Dennis “Denny” Wayne Pettit, 77, of Lafayette, Indiana passed away on Friday November 8, 2024 at Saint Anthony Healthcare Center. Denny was born February 9,1947 to Edna Ruth (Cunningham) and the late Lyle Wayne Pettit. Denny graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1965. He attended an Electronic Trade school in Chicago, Illinois before he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970 on the submarine USS Trout. On May 7, 1994, he married Marcia Dieterle in West Lafayette.
Denny worked for years at Tipmont REMC as an electrician/lineman and then as an electrician at the AE Staley South plant. He enjoyed serving as a Community Services Director at the Lafayette Veterans Home for many years. As a proud veteran, he was very active in the American Legion. He served locally as the finance officer and Commander at Post 492. Later, he served as the 2nd District Commander and the Northern Vice Commander. He was an active member of the local Forty & Eight Club, the Navy Club and the VFW. He served as State Commander of the Navy Club Ship 12.
Denny loved fishing, playing golf, bowling, and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed anything family and would go out of his way to help any family or friend in need.
Surviving along with his wife Marcia, are his children: Daughters Christina (Tim) Rice of Columbia City, IN and Kimberly (Roby) Wilson of Santa Clarita, CA; Stepchildren Kristine Taylor and Scott (Jane) Dieterle both of Lafayette, IN; Brother Gene (Jerri) Pettit and Mother Edna Pettit.

SCARPA .. .. .. William L. Scarpa October 1, 1938 - October 24, 2024
William "Bill" Lewis Scarpa, 86, a longtime resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, about one year after the death of his beloved wife of 60 years, Carol. He was born in New Haven on October 1, 1938 to Mary (D'Amato) and William Scarpa. Bill leaves behind his brother Dominic Scarpa as well as his two children: son Paul Scarpa and his wife Maria Liebl Scarpa of Guilford, and daughter Susan Hebert and her husband Keith Hebert of Oregon. Poppy Bill was the adored grandfather of Nina and Julian Scarpa, and Jack and Paige Hebert.
Bill honorably served in the U.S. Navy on the submarine USS Cavalla from 1956 to 1960. He then obtained degrees in Electrical Engineering and Fire Science at University of New Haven and enjoyed a long career as a Professional Engineer at United Illuminating and its subsidiary Precision Power, Inc., which Bill was instrumental in founding.
Bill was passionate about his many hobbies, including traveling the globe from Siberia to Africa and riding his motorcycles all over the country. He was a prize-winning hunter and shark fisherman, earning the nickname "Sharky." Some of his most cherished memories were made during his exploits with lifelong friends who were truly family.
In his later years, he was regularly seen at the Guilford Sportsmen's Association giving generously of his time to the organization that he loved, accompanied by his loyal chocolate Labrador Retriever, Lucy. His most joyous times were spent with his grandchildren: adventures during visits to the Pacific Northwest, passing down his fishing skills and knowledge of the outdoors, and proudly attending every ceremony, school event, recital, activity, and baseball game he could, camera in hand.
His funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte 80), East Haven Saturday morning at 10:00. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 10:30. Military Honors will take place following Mass. Burial will be private at a later date.

McAFEE .. .. .. Robert Wayne McAfee age 85 of Pulaski, TN passed peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of November 6th, 2024 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Pontotoc, MS on May 19th, 1939 to the late Robert Edward McAfee and Duff Johnson McAfee. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the USS Bergall nuclear submarine. He was retired from TVA where he worked at Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Plant for many years of his career as an electrician. He also helped to build the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the Boeing facility in Decatur, Alabama, and the Toyota manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama. He also had a few side jobs during his career such as insulation and owning the Pulaski Glass business for a few years. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He was a man of many talents and could practically fix anything in the areas of automobiles, tractors, carpentry, construction, plumbing and especially electricity. He also loved to cook and was always in the kitchen trying new recipes. He perfected his mother’s famous fried pies which he lovingly delivered to friends and family in the community.
He was a member of the Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church where he faithfully served his church and community. He was an excellent husband, father, and grandfather and will be sorely missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and church family.
He is preceded in death by his parents mentioned above along with his son Christopher Troy McAfee, brother James Edward McAfee, nephew James Brian McAfee, brother in law William “Pete” Britton and sister in law Betty McAfee.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Mary Ann Britton McAfee, son Robert Erik McAfee, daughter Suzanne McAfee Hillhouse, grandson Ryan Colter McAfee, granddaughter Mary Savannah Hillhouse, sister Joyce Ann Beech, brother Kenny (Cathy) McAfee, and sister in law Mildred Britton. Several cousins, nephews, and nieces also survive.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Pisgah cemetery with his valued friend of many years and brother in Christ Paul McKinney officiating. Anyone who would like to say a few words or share a memory will have the chance to do so at the service.
