GAUNCE .. .. .. David Matthew Gaunce, 58, of Jefferson City, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2024. Born on September 21, 1966, in Dover, Delaware, he was the beloved son of Donald and Alma Jane (Weekley) Gaunce and a proud graduate of Dover High School. David served his country honorably in the United States Navy for 12 years, specializing in submarine operations and achieving the rank of E-6. His dedication to his country was matched only by his commitment to those around him. As the supply officer aboard his submarine, he ensured that his crew was always well-equipped and supported. Known for his infectious laughter, David had a unique ability to brighten any room. Friends and family will remember him for his warmth, humor, and the joy he brought to their lives. A lover of Christmas, David was affectionately known as “Mr. Christmas.” He took great delight in helping his neighbors with their holiday decorations, spreading joy and warmth throughout the community. His generous spirit made the festive season even more special for everyone around him. David is survived by his brothers, Daniel Gaunce (Dee) and Joe Calogero; his sisters, Dianna McBeth and Dawn Miller; and several cherished nieces and nephews. Rest in peace, David. Your legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew you. DONAHUE .. .. .. Roger Allan Donahue, son of the late Edward and Ruth Donahue, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at Apple Rehab Coccomo. Born on April 23, 1955, at the Groton, CT Naval Submarine Base, he took great pride in his birthplace. Roger graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven in 1973 and later attended Southern Connecticut State University. He dedicated 17 years to the State Department of Developmental Services at Southbury Training School, where he worked as a supervisor, before retiring due to disability.
Roger was a cherished, adopted member of the Quinnipiac Indian Tribe, recognized for his discovery of the Thanksgiving Day Rock. His contribution is honored with a plaque, and he was given the tribal name "High Turtle." He enjoyed fossil hunting with his brother, Mike, and took pride in discovering a 200-year-old fish fossil. Roger also maintained an impressive antique bottle collection. Since June 8, 1994, he has been proudly clean and sober, a milestone he deeply valued.
He is survived by his first wife, Brenda Morelli; his second wife, Cathy Magan; his brothers, Michael Donahue and wife Gail, Patrick Donahue and wife Cathy, and John Donahue; and his sisters, Elaine Hawking and Sandra Donahue. Roger was predeceased by his brother, Edward Donahue. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, November 1st, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450. A celebration of Roger's life will follow at 11 a.m., with a few selected loved ones sharing memories in his honor.

CLARKE .. .. .. In loving memory of Richard Lankford Clarke, whose legacy is as rich and varied as his jokes were plentiful. Born on October 6, 1933, in Virginia Beach, VA, Richard recently celebrated his 91st birthday before his peaceful passing in Warner Robins, GA, on October 23, 2024. He was a man who truly lived life with wit and charm, often leaving those around him with a smile, a chuckle, or, on occasion, a hearty laugh.
Richard, who proudly served as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, spent his career reaching high both literally and figuratively. His time as a Boom Operator allowed him to touch the sky-much like how his endless optimism and humor touched countless lives. Upon concluding his service in the Air Force, he continued his diligent work in submarine quality control for civil service in the Navy, a fitting role for a man who was not only professional but also had an unmatched knack for diving deep into stories and extracting the finest punchlines.
Preceded in death by his loving parents Erwin Nelson Clarke and Billye Ives Clarke, and by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Shirley Hodson Clarke, Richard is survived by his devoted children: Jo Lynn Hart (Bruce) and Steven Richard Clarke, both of Warner Robins. His joyous legacy extends through his grandchildren, Kelly Millard, Michael Hart, Ryan Clarke, and Jared Clarke, and his great-grandchildren, Mason Sweat, Austin Millard, Emma Clarke, and Stephan Clarke.
A lover of flight, Richard piloted his own aircraft, sharing tales and jokes with anyone willing to listen. He was a loyal member of the VFW, a comrade who never missed an opportunity to infuse gatherings with laughter.
Richard's passing will be honored with military formalities at the Andersonville National Cemetery; details of the ceremony are currently being finalized. As we celebrate his life, we are reminded of his trademark humor and affection, forever captured in the countless stories and jokes he generously shared.
Rest easy, Richard, knowing your spirit continues to soar high above, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and love that will keep us smiling in your memory.

SHELDON .. .. .. Sheldon Wayne Lewis, passed away peacefully in Redding, CA on October 17, 2024, just one day after celebrating his 104th birthday. Born on October 16, 1920, Sheldon lived a long, rich life filled with dedication, adventure, and service.
A proud Navy veteran, Sheldon served his country aboard the USS Gunnel submarine in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, in 1947, he settled as a homesteader in Tulelake, establishing roots that would grow into a legacy. He worked with the County Road Department, later branching into self-employment as a skilled dragline operator. Known for his dedication to community, he played a vital role in building the Newell Baptist Church and contributed to the planning of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair horse show and was a horse club leader.
A true adventurer, he participated in the historic Great American Horse Race of 1976, trekking across the U.S. from New York to Sacramento. His passion for horses and competition was also evident in his numerous Levi Ride & Tie events.
Sheldon was a lifetime member of the VFW, holding his service close to his heart.
He is survived by his beloved daughter Linda, grandchildren Russell, Shele, Niki (Will), Kacy, Tera (Matt), Kacee and AJ (Kaillee), great-grandchildren Tyler, Ryan (Jessie), Tara, Sadie, Fawkes and Lassen. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, daughter Carol, son Robert and grandson Rodney.
Linda would like to share that, despite any hardships he faced, her dad always maintained a positiCarl G. Lund, age 88, died on October 28th, 2024, at his home in Blue Ash, Ohio. Carl was born on February 8th, 1936, in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Carl was a devoted father to his son, Carl Rex and his grandson, Carl Richard, both living in Blue Ash, Ohio. Carl’s main recreation was driving stock cars and golf. Carl was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kenwood and a member of Kenwood Country Club. Carl’s winter home was in Naples Florida, and he was a long-time member of the Imperial Golf Club in Naples, Florida. Carl Served in Submarines in the United States Navy reserve for eight years; he was on the board of the United Way in Beloit, Wisconsin, serving as Board Member, Budget Director, and President. He was also the Vice President of the Rotary Club, and board member of the Chamber of Commerce. Carl retired from Pepsi-Cola after forty-four years, as Senior Vice President of Sales Operations. Carl was Vice President of the Cincinnati Division for five years, then was promoted to Group VP of the Western group, Group VP of the Eastern group and retired as Company Corporate VP. A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, from 12:00pm until time of Celebration of Life Service at 1:00pm, both at Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home, 10211 Plainfield Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45241. OF INTEREST .. .. .. LONDON (AP) — Two people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at the shipyard that builds Britain's nuclear-powered submarines, but there was “no nuclear risk,” police said Wednesday.
Cumbria Constabulary said a “significant” fire broke out soon after midnight at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, northwest England. The cause of the blaze was being investigated.
Video shared on social media showed flames shooting out from the Devonshire Dock Hall building while alarms blared.
“When I opened the front door, we just saw a lot of black smoke," said Donna Butler, who lives next to the shipyard. “It was a lot of black smoke, like really thick black smoke, and it was very loud.”
The force said two people were taken to hospitals with suspected smoke inhalation and there were no other casualties. BAE Systems said the two people, who worked at the facility, were later released from hospital.
By midafternoon, police said firefighters had suppressed the fire “and have moved onto dampening down.”
Police initially advised people living nearby to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed, but the advice was lifted on Wednesday afternoon.
The 150-year-old shipyard, about 220 miles (350 kilometers) northwest of London, is currently building several nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Navy. It is also where the four subs that carry the U.K.'s nuclear missiles were constructed, and where replacements for those vessels, due to enter service in the 2030s, are being constructed.
