Master and Commander Posts: 1576 Location: Wollongong, NSW | Subject: RE: Australian Flooding It always makes we wonder why we allow buildings in flood prone areas. The title searches show where these areas are. We (the house) receives rain in metres per year but the drains allow it to run the 200 metres downhill to the sea. Most of the Brisbane flooding is up river. The tidal flow is rapid; (from memory) general height difference is about 2.4 metres. The downtown areas and CBD are generally well above flood heights. Big problem there and in most towns and cities is that all watercourses are overgrown with foliage or have been reduced in size such that damming is prominent in even moderate rain. There can always be freaks of nature (Toowoomba) coupled with bad drainage but Brisbane is just like the flood areas of north-coast NSW. Grafton areas flood every time there is decent rain - the houses are rural and mainly on stilts. If people fly over the interior of Australia it is easy to see why the ten year or so inland rains can flood areas larger than Europe or half the size of the US. Learn to live with the country. | ||
