Plankowner Posts: 5024 Location: Gulfport, MS | Subject: Obits for Tuesday November 30, 2010 Edward George Campbell, 94, of Mount Dora, Fla., died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010. Edward was born Sept. 10, 1916 in Philadelphia, Pa. He joined the United States Navy in November 1940 serving for 13 years during World War II and the Korean era. Edward was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was assigned to the USS Widgeon, which was the lead ship that helped fight fires on the USS Oklahoma, the USS California, and the USS Arizona. He then entered the submarine service and was assigned to the USS Grayling and then to the USS Tirante. During this service, he was part of nine combat war patrols. While assigned to the Grayling, based out of Australia, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Rail. They were married on Nov. 18, 1943 in Perth, Australia. Because of his pending Australian wedding, Edward was re-assigned off the Grayling, which was schedule to return to the states for overhaul. It was on that mission that the Grayling was lost and presumed sunk, never to be heard from again. Edward received the Bronze Star, two Silver Stars, and the Submarine Combat Pin for his bravery. In 1953, Edward was honorably discharged as Commander and returned to his wife and family in Wayne, Pa. He attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and along with his brother Thomas formed Great Valley Industries. In 1985, he retired to New Smyrna Beach where he enjoyed golfing, gardening, tennis, fishing and the competitive game of bridge. Edward is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marjorie; son Geoffrey Campbell of West Chester, Pa.; twin daughters, Lorraine Stackhouse of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Rosemont, Pa., Barbara Brooks of Wayne, Pa.; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One of his grandchildren James Edward Brooks preceded him in death in 2004. The family has asked that instead of flowers, to make a donation to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778 whose loving care assisted Edward and his family during his passing. (Published in Main Line Media News on November 30, 2010) Thomas Allen Tift, 74, died Sunday November 28, 2010. Tom was born May 5, 1936 in Kalamazoo to Max A. and Florence (Webb) Tift. He attended Parchment, Plainwell and Kalamazoo public schools and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1954. He joined the US Navy, volunteered for submarine school, and was assigned to the USS Wahoo (SS-565) based in Pearl Harbor. He graduated from Western Michigan University and later earned a Master of Arts degree at San Diego State University. For 31 years, he taught junior and senior high math and was a school administrator in the San Diego Public Schools. While living in San Diego, Tom was active in his church and in Democratic politics, although he also sometimes voted Republican. Tom retired and moved back to Kalamazoo in 1991, to marry Mary (Newland) Wade. In 1992, Tom became a local and national disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross, a role which turned into a second career when he became a reserve staff member. He was dedicated to insuring that people whose lives had been disrupted by disaster received the best possible assistance to meet their needs and begin recovery. Over nearly 17 years, he was assigned to more than 55 national disasters throughout the continental United States, plus Guam, Puerto Rico and St. Croix. In addition, he served on the local Disaster Action Team and in other volunteer capacities for the Kalamazoo Area Chapter of ARC. He was an instructor of ARC disaster training courses and a mentor for new and advanced ARC volunteers. Tom was a voracious reader of books and newspapers and passed along his love of reading to his children. Tom and Mary were enthusiastic travelers and campers, especially after her retirement in 2000. They delighted in visiting children and grandchildren. Other favorite activities included white water rafting, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, fishing and golf. He loved Beethoven, Brahms and Willie Nelson; beaches, pelicans and sunsets (sunrises not so much). From the time Tom was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor on February 12, 2010, he faced impending death with courage and an unfailing sense of humor. Despite the increasing ravages of the disease, Tom viewed the nine months since his diagnosis as a gift of time; to sit with Mary watching the birds at the feeder, to enjoy being together one more time with dear friends, to unreservedly express his love for his children and grandchildren, to be overwhelmed again and again by the outpouring of kindness from friends and neighbors. As Tom neared the end of life, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan staff provided exceptionally compassionate and competent care and constant encouragement. In addition to Mary, Tom is survived by five children and their spouses: Thomas A. Tift Jr. and Susan Frost, Averill Park, NY; Trudy Thekla, National City, CA; Larry Tift and Sabine Steck, San Diego, CA; Wendy (Tift) and Lance Sutherland, Carlsbad, CA, and Molly Wade Chase and Daniel Chase, Battle Creek; nine grandchildren, Rhiannon Guerra, National City, CA; Joel Frost-Tift, Averill Park, NY; Seth Frost-Tift, Averill Park, NY; Carson Sutherland, Carlsbad, CA; Lyndsay Sutherland, Carlsbad, CA; Simone Tift, San Diego, CA; Ethan Tift, San Diego, CA; Maxwell Chase, Battle Creek, and Allison Chase, Battle Creek; three great grandchildren: Enrique Lopez Jr., Maribelle Jones and Sienna Jones, of National City, CA. He is also survived by two stepbrothers, Chuck Warner, Portage, and Mike Warner, San Diego, CA, and a half-sister, Donna Warner, Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by a sister Judy (Tift) Gentry and a stepbrother, Jeff Warner. At Tom's request, his body is being donated to the Anatomic Gift Foundation for the purpose of medical science and education. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 11 at the American Red Cross, 5640 Venture Court; Kalamazoo, MI 49009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Kalamazoo Area Chapter ARC disaster services or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Arrangements by Life Story Funeral Homes, Betzler - Kalamazoo; 6080 Stadium Drive, 375-2900. Crew Posts: 50 | Subject: RE: Obits for Tuesday November 30, 2010 Thanks Pig, Tom Tift and I were high school classmates and joined the navy together. After boot camp we were both assigned to SUBADMIN Mare Island where we volunteered for submarines and went to a two week indoctrination at Hunters Point. We both were assigned to boats in Pearl Harbor. I went to Bugara and Tom went to Wahoo. A few months later Tom had an epilectic seizure while in his bunk in the ATR and broke his back when he fell out of his bunk and hit the steel deck. After a lot of medical treatment and recovery it was decided he was unfit for further duty and was medically discharged as a YN3. DBF | ||
