| Subject: USS Daniel Webster SSBN-626 Bow Planes
I am trying to pin down some dates as to when the DW had her bow planes. A picture taken during her launching clearly shows her with sail planes, so she was apparently fitted with the new set up prior to her commissioning (commissioning photos show her with bow planes). When were they removed?
There is a lot of conflicting info out there.

Bow planes were removed during the last overhaul at EB...rough time frame is 1975-1978...if you need an exact date, then you'll have to find someone that rode her through the yards at that time.

Do you know why they were removed? Was it a flow noise issue or was it mechanical?

Interesting point....the newest PLAN boomers have sail planes....the Project 094 Jins......

I was told (note second, third, etc, hand info here) that the boat handled great, more better than using sail planes, however comma, the Sonar girls complained of the noise...if there were other issues, I ain't privy to them, sorry.

Thanks for your input on the bow planes vs sail planes........My comment above was about the newest PLAN DE subs and sail planes.......Makes you wonder just how much the Chinese sub builders know about building very quiet boats.....There are newer versions of the Project 039 Song boats.......all have sail planes very far forward....soem good pics of these Chinese boats on TSR site.
The newest US SSNs, i.e., the Seawolfs & Virginias all have bow planes, I figure we must have used them for a very good reason.....

The bow planes also slowed the boat down some. |

All the early bow planes were terrible for radiating noise.
If you were slow and at periscope depth using the bow planes, it would be the hydraulic noise.
If you were going faster and vibrating a little, it would not be flow noise, but the rattling in the loose linkages and gearing.
Newer gearing technology solves it for the VA & 21s.

Hey! Thanks for the info! So, if I have the timeline correct, she was launched with sailplanes, converted to bowplanes prior to commissioning, and reverted to sailplanes in 1975. Correct?

I made 2 patrols on the 626 in '67. It had bow planes then and they worked real well. There was much noise caused by them for the sonar girls. The did a good job when coming up to scope depth for shooting stars with the type 11 scope. |
