Since all you gentlemen have come up with your photos from "days gone by", Garry has graciously let me
post his from Nuclear Power School, Mare Island, 1963-64. It's a bit grainy and worn, but still doesn't
"change" the demeanor of the man!

I too went to S1W from Mare Island, but later... in 74.  When I was in Mare Island, there was an EM club on the base with topless dancing (shhh....).  They had a great burrito and the beer came fast and furious.  I don't think our learning efficiency was so hot in the afternoon

There was a young lady dancer there of particular note... she could "stuff" herself into your ballcap (c'mon, use your imagination) and dance around while your hat "stayed in place."  She had a nickname.... lessee, what wuzzit....????

What Class? I was 7406, section 11. Someplace I have a group picture......

I remember that old club. Good burgers, and a short walk from either the schoolhouse or the barracks.

Was back in 89-90 to Decomm Plunger & Shark - Power School building was still there, some sort of yardbird training center, but the barracks (which were condemned when we lived in them) are all gone - bare dirt, along with the old Club. But the Horse & Cow was still there.

I remember a blonde dancer named Barbara, she was dating one of the NPS instructors. They called her "Iron Maiden", or something like that. And a well-upholstered brunette whose name escapes me....

"Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days...."

Are you sure it was 1962? Most of the cars look relatively new and are of the 1955 - 1957 era. I've never been there, just curious.

I remember being in section 7 at Mare Island and class 63-3 at A1W. I left MI the end of Dec. 1963 and reported to NPTU Idaho Jan 6th 1964. I lived at the "Ranch Motel" on the way to the site until I was selected as a staff instructor. It sure was cold waiting for those "10 wheelers". We must have been about the same place at the same time.

Roy,

Since that is the picture I took from my Nuke school barracks room window, I can guarentee that the picture was taken in 62. John Clear, my cousiin Ron and I were there from Jan to June of 62. I think the picture was taken in the April/May timeframe. I would love to have some of those cars in the parking lot (if they were still in that sme pristine condition). Of course I wish I was still in the pristine condition that I was way back then. Oh well, life just keeps moving on.

Talk about "memory loss"...I was given some erroneous info by my "Chief"...he was in Class 64-3 Aug. '64 to Jan. '65., reporting to West Milton Feb. '65 finishing Oct. '65. Little side note to West Milton...he
spent 2 mos. in the hospital in Albany with mono (no jokes, please) and upon returning he was kept in the same class finishing 39th in a class of 165. Every once in a blue moon, we take a "joy ride" up there.

Us DBFers gotta get our two cents in here. I too have great memories of Mare Island, I got transferred to the US Naval Hospital there in in 1957, then they closed it and transferred me down to the shipyard dispensary where I stayed til 59. There was no submarine base, no Nuclear power school, not too much of anything. I do remember of a big lot of brand new V-8 motors on palats that were supposed to be for PT boats, dont imagine much is the same after 49 years. I do remember the liberty and social life were great, and that is where I decided I wanted to go into Submarines, There was a second class submariner stationed there by the name of Hoot GiPson (with a p instead of a b) who captivated my imagination with his no s***ers, I never heard of him again, but I did go on to 6 months advanced Hospital Corps school and then 6 month of Submarine school and then to Growler in Pearl, in late 59, and the rest is history (Mostly restricted) But us old DBFers sure did have fun!

Hey Doc, did you ever run into another HM in PH named Bob Michaud?

He went by the nickname "Frenchy". I know he was on Medregal in the early 60's

Donald... yeah, must've been the gal I'm talking about.  I'll dig into my records tonight but that may have been my class number!  They had the "cattle car" running to the chow hall.  Wish I could remember some of the instructor's names... I may have a photo as well... I'll look.

Anybody here go to NPS Orlando?

I figured you would have run into him. He made chief probably in 1963, and later that year reported to Sea Robin in NLON where we served together for 4 years.

Great guy, hilarious wit. We had a lot of fun together. But when it came to tending the troops...there was no one better. He took it VERY seriously.

Sad to report we lost DOC in April of 2006. "Sailor, Rest Your Oar."

There is a link to pictures of him if you go back to my previous post.  Some were taken in 1964.

also by 74 NPS the school move over to what used to be WAVE boot camp because of the damage that happened during the cloudburst in the summer of 69

I know it is an old thread, but I just read this page and to answer the question, yes, I was class 8203 at NPS Orlando. When we left Orlando, we were split between all 3 prototype locations. I went to Ballston Spa (S8G) and my running mate through school to that point wound up in Windsor Locks (S1C). I know some of the class went to Idaho as well.

I am aware that this makes me the "punk" on the board.
